Dragon Bane Walkthrough

Here is the uncensored walkthrough, written by Larry Fluckiger, in his own words (last updated Sep 5 2000).
The text is put in a text box to avoid seeing things by mistake. If you want to read the next line, just scroll the text.

For those that are interested, here is a complete walkthrough of DragonBane.
This version is more accurate and complete than the others I have posted in
the past. This walkthrough explains how to get through the puzzles and traps
in the game, but it doesn't cover things like how to configure and equip
your party, how to fight, how to heal or promote, etc.

Treleon:

* Walk around and thump on bad guys until your party is about level 3,
  then leave the city and explore the wilderness. When you are level 4
  or 5 and you are well equipped for fighting, you are ready for the
  Catacombs.

Catacombs 1:

* The gate into the catacombs is located in the N.W. of the
  wilderness. Wait until night, go thru the gate, and take the ladder
  down into Catacombs 1 (C1).

* To get thru the barrier in front of the ladder in C1, press the
  button to the left of the barrier.

* In the east is a long hallway with a spin trap in the middle. When
  you step on it, it turns you around. Just check your map after each
  step, and just turn around again after you step in the trap (four
  steps from either end).

* There is a fake pit trap and a barrier in the south. Walk over the
  pit and then back onto it to remove the barrier.

* In the center are three locked doors with potions behind them. You
  will be able to get thru only one of them.

* If you need to use the up ladder to leave the catacombs, press the
  button to its left to unlock the gate. The button gets pressed
  automatically at night to unlock the gate. It is unpressed when
  morning changes to full day. Pressing the button allows you to leave
  and re-enter as much as you want until the following noon, when the
  button will depress, locking the gate until the next night.

* Find the topaz key in a chest in the south, then open the locked
  gate in the S.E. As with most locked gates, there is a key hole on
  one side of it. When any one of your characters has the correct key,
  step forward into the keyhole to unlock the gate. Then step thru the
  gate and go down the ladder to Catacombs 2.

Catacombs 2:

* Don't fall thru the pit trap, yet.

* Find the quartz key in a chest in the N.W. The chest in in an alcove
  at the north end of the north-south hallway.

* To get thru the big room with all the teleport traps: Stand in the
  doorway, and move FRFRFRFFtLFFLFtALFF, where F = forward, R = move
  right, tL = turn left, tA = turn around, etc. When you get to the
  other side, use the quartz key and take the ladder to C3.

* In the N.E., if you go south past the "It's best to disarm yourself"
  sign, you may loose armor, weapons, rings, etc. you are
  wearing. Just unequip your equipment, but don't forget to re-equip
  it as you leave the room.

* In the south is a sign that says "Rejuvenate." Through the gate and
  then to the northeast are two special locations. Every other time
  you stem on one of them, you gain a hit point until you reach your
  maximum. The other one increases your spell points up to the
  maximum.

Catacombs 3:

* You will need the turquoise key to get thru the gate in the south,
  but you don't have it yet.

* There are three chests in hidden rooms. You have to walk thru walls
  with scratches on them to get into hidden rooms. You know you are
  close when you loose your map (in two places).

* Collect all the stuff, go back up the ladder to C2 and fall thru the
  pit trap to C4.

Catacombs 4:

* Collect all the stuff, then get the turquoise key off the east side
  of the pillar room.

* In the pillar room, spinners turn you around. Have someone cast
  magic compass so you can see when you get spun. There is a button on
  a pillar near the south wall. I have no idea what it does.

* To unlock the gate near the north west corner of C4, face the gate,
  step left as far as you can, step forward thru the wall, and press
  the button on the wall.

* There are two portals on this level. The portal in the south is just
  a shortcut to the north of this same level. The one in the west
  takes you to C2.

* When you are finished with this level, take the west portal to C2,
  and go down the ladder to C3. The turquoise key let's you thru the
  gate at the S.W. corner of C3, where you will find the sentry
  key. The portal there takes you back to Treleon. You are now done
  with the catacombs!

Lasingham:

* Lasingham is in the east of the wilderness. You should be about
  level 8 by now.

* The way into the basement is hidden in one of the buildings. Try all
  buildings in the first or second block south of the center
  courtyard. If you leave the basement, its entrance will move to
  another building.

* In the basement you will find about 15 chests with money (about 1000
  gold pieces total) and a few items, but no particularly special
  items. There is a button on a wall in the passage to the north, and
  lots of passages thru walls. The button unblocks the way to one of
  the passages.

* Use the Sentry key at the gate near the S.W. corner of Lasingham.
  This lets you into the prison.

Prison:

* Prison 1 has a square hallway with no exit. On the east side, check
  the map after each step. At one point you teleport to P2 without
  noticing.  At that point, turn around and go forward so you don't
  teleport back to P1.  Go around and take the teleporter back to P1.

* Explore the main section of this P1 level and find the teleporter.
  Face it, then turn around and press the button on the wall so you
  can enter the teleporter. Step into the teleporter, which takes you
  to the N.E. corner of P2, then immediately turn around and press the
  button on the wall. There are two teleporters in this section of
  P2. Take the one in the N.W., which takes you to the N.E. corner of
  P1 from where you can teleport to the main part of P2. The one in
  the S.E. takes you back to the main area of P1. When you pressed the
  button you gained access to a teleporter later on in the S.E. part
  of this level.

* In the main part of P2 are two teleporters right next to each other.
  The one on the east just takes you upstairs to the main area of
  P1. Take the one on the west which takes you to the S.W. corner of
  P1.

* In the S.W. corner of P1 there is a teleporter to the main part of
  P2. You don't need it. Instead, go to the north past where you "feel
  a slight draft nearby". You will teleport to the S.W. corner of P2.

* In the S.W. corner of P2 is a chest that contains the copper key.
  Take the teleporter from this area to the main area of P1. Fall thru
  the pit trap to P2.

* Some doors are locked in the cell block in P2. The button to unlock
  them is on the right of the entrance.

* Use the copper key to get thru the gate at the S.E. part of the main
  area of P2. You will find the dragon Nix there. Defeat him, pick up
  the sapphire key, and you are done with the prison!

Braston:

* Braston is the town in the S.W. of the wilderness. You need the
  sapphire key to get in. You should be about experience level 9.

* Go thru the city wall at the N.E. corner of Braston. Press the
  button on the outside of the wall. Now you will find, in the
  S.W. corner, a new passage way into the west of the city. Find the
  pit, and jump into the sewers.

Sewers 1:

* The diamond key is off a long hallway in the east. You have to back
  up or you will teleport past it. To get to the chest in the next
  hallway to the east, go around to the north and come in from behind.

* Just east of the big room in the N.W. is a short hallway. Pressing
  the button on the west wall of this hall makes it longer. There is a
  teleporter at the end that takes you into the big room where you
  will find the pearl key.

* Use the pearl key to get to the ladder in the S.W. to go to S2.

Sewers 2:

* If you pass the "Wealth is immaterial" sign, you will lose
  your gold.

* In the west is a room full of pit traps. The pits move as you walk
  past them. Carefully walk around them until you can get to the other
  side. I haven't found a set pattern that works every time, but after
  I walk into the room, I turn left and try to walk on every step in
  the SW of the room. Then I move to the east wall and walk north,
  then west. I have the success moving a pit by facing it, and then
  moving left or right without turning.

* There is a teleport trap in the N.E. labeled, "A weak man can step
  within" that teleports you to Braston. This is helpful if you can't
  cast Open Portal.

* Take the ladder down to S3.

Sewer 3:

* You will find a locked door near the center. To unlock it, move
  BRRF, then press the button. Inside you will find the Devastator,
  but you won't be able to use it until you are about level 13.  *
  There is a small area in the N.E. that you have to walk thru walls
  in the east to get into. I have found nothing special there.  * The
  diamond key opens a gate in the S.E. behind which you will find
  Orac. After dealing with him, you will find the gold key. You are
  finished with the Sewers!

West of Kingdom:

* The entrance to the Temple is located in an area called "West of
  Kingdom". The entrance is in the west of the Wilderness. You need
  the gold key to get in. Your party should be at experience level 11
  or 12 by now.  * The Experimental Gardens has fruit trees.  * The
  entrance to the Temple is in the west.

Temple 1:

* A sign that faces west says "Signs facing west lie". That's true for
  all signs on this level but this one.

* Step into the room in the S.W. with the pillars. Ignore the sign on
  the pillar to your right because it faces west. Follow the
  directions on the pillar to your left. (When it says L or R, it
  means turn left or right, not move left or right.) When you hit the
  sign that says "Go right," go left instead, because it faces
  west. Follow the instructions on the sign you run into. You will
  face one more sign that will take you thru the door. You will find
  the DragonBane.

* Here are more explicit pillar room instructions (R = turn right, L =
  turn left, F = forward): Stand in the hallway in the south of Temple
  1, facing north into the closed gate that leads to the pillar
  room. Move F (through the gate), FFF (into the pillar room), LFR
  (you face the sign on the pillar on the west of the entrance), read
  the sign, LFRFFRFFFF (you face the sign near the middle of the east
  wall), read and ignore the sign, LFFFF (you face the sign on the
  north wall), read the sign, LFFLFFRFFFF (you face the sign on the
  west wall), read the sign, RFFRFFLFFFF (you face the sign in the
  north hallway), read the sign, RF through gate. You are through.

* Take the ladder down to T2.

Temple 2:

* You can't get to the end of the Pathway to Eternity. Go 14 steps
  from the west corner and an opening will open up behind you. Back up
  to it.  You will find the emerald key.

* To unlock the locked gate where it says "Go around", walk around the
  outside clockwise.

* There is a place called "Bring only what you need." If you go past,
  you will loose items, but you will find something good, like bracers
  of courage.

* There is a place in the N.W. corner where you can only see two
  squares ahead. Don't worry about the limited visibility. Go toward
  the east, use the emerald key, and you will find Trassat.

* After dealing with Trassat, you can go up a ladder to a new area of
  the West of Kingdom. Watch out for the spinner trap between the two
  buildings. Take the ladder in the next building down into the Lair
  of Kra'an.

Lair of Kra'an 1:

* In the west is a room full of pits. The key here is to watch the
  ceiling. You can safely walk on any pit that has a pit above it in
  the ceiling. You find the jade key on the far side of the room.

* The S.W.-most pit in the pit room teleports you back to Treleon.
  This is handy if you can't cast Open Portal.

* Use the jade key to go down the ladder in the N.E.

Lair 2:

* Explore the level. You can't yet get thru the gate in the S.W. yet
  because you don't have the platinum key. The only way to get into
  the N.W.  is to fall thru one of the pits in the pit room on L1, but
  you don't need to get there.

* Fall thru the pit to Lair 3.

Lair 3:

* Find the platinum key in the north.

* There are three spin traps on this level.

* Go thru the wall to the east and take the teleporter back to Lair 2.
  Now you can open the gate and take the ladder in the S.W back to the
  other part of Lair 3.

* Walk down the long hallway in the south-center with a pit at the
  end. Your party will take damage. Watch out for the spin trap in the
  middle.  Hop in the pit to level 4.

Lair 4:

* Walk thru the wall to the north of the room you fall into.

* The only portal is in the S.W. You have to walk thru a wall to find
  it. This level is full of nasty monsters, so you will probably need
  it.

* Kra'an is thru the wall in the south-center. Your spells like armor
  will disappear when you get close to him, but you can re-cast
  them. No weapon or magic will hit him except the DragonBane. Good
  luck. When you defeat him, the game is finished.
